Day 30, Phew!

I can’t believe it is finally Day 30! I only missed 6 days of the un-challenge!

Day 30 – What is/are the most memorable questions or reactions you’ve gotten in regards to being a two-mom family?

The most memorable things are that no one recognizes us as a 2 mom family when they see us in public. They always ask, “Are you sisters?” “Cousins?”  They have asked D if she was my mother! LMAO! Yes, she is 6 1/2 years older than me, but she does not look it! (Although I must say, I do have very young, girlish good looks! LOL!) I think they just can’t figure us out, so they assume things. You should see their faces when I say, “No, she’s my wife.” Hahahahahaha! I guess it comes with the territory when you are both femme 🙂

I think it’s funny that people always want to know how we are related to each other. I have never come up to someone in a store and asked them about their family, yet so many strangers ask us! And it is mostly when Big D isn’t with us!

Some of the other moms in Big D’s school know about us, and some are still trying to figure us out. We always go to his stuff together, but we have never come out and said,  “Hi, I’m M and this is my wife D. We are Big D’s moms.”  They know our names. They know we live together. If someone asks, we will never lie, but our philosophy is that if we do not make it a big deal, neither will they. It’s worked so far!

One day, I had to go to a football breakfast by myself with Big D (the mothers cook breakfast for the football players and cheerleaders – where are all the fathers??!) Anyway, the boys all have to wear dress shirts and ties to the away games, so we were standing around talking about who helped their kid tie their tie. They were all saying, “oh, his dad did it. I could never do it.” So I piped in and said,  “Well, there are no men in our household, so I taught myself how to do it. It was either me or nobody!”  We all giggled about that, except for one mom whose son is best friends with Big D. She kind of looked at me sideways. I guess she didn’t know! It was good though because we chatted a bunch after that comment, and she seemed fine. I still haven’t come out and said it to her face, but you would think they would put two and two together!

So there, 22 posts in 30 days. Not bad, considering it used to be like 3 posts or less in 30 days! This non-challenge was fun! I hope to participate in another one someday!

About thelesbiannextdoor

I am a 43 year old lesbian, living with her wife in a small town. I have a 25 year old step-son. Who knows, I could be your neighbor ;) (Unless you know for sure your neighbor is not a lesbian - then I'm probably not!)

  1. we get a lot of that sister-confusion too. very frustrating…

  2. Ha. We don’t get a lot of sister confusion because our coloring and features are so different. But most of the time, people just don’t ask. It always surprises me when others ask about family make-up- unless I’m talking with someone for a while, I don’t like prying into strangers’ lives. We do love shocking people with ‘wife’ talk 😉

    • Heehee 🙂 You’re lucky people aren’t asking you all the time. Most of the time we find it funny, but it can get old fast. Mostly we get asked by random people as we are walking through stores….what’s up with that? Weird.

    • lol. dragon and i are of different racial backgrounds (pakistani and filipina), but we still get asked if we’re sisters, most recently by nurses in both hospitals.
